John Cross Bedford Partnership (LSP) and Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association

John is Chief Executive of bpha , Bedford’s largest provider of affordable housing. He has held the post since April 1995. John is also Chair of Bedford Partnership Board [BPB], Bedford’s local strategic partnership.

bpha is a leading provider and developer of affordable homes for rent, purchase and shared ownership. It owns and manages nearly 12,000 properties across Central, Southern and Eastern England and is currently building more than 1,200 new homes.

bpha is an investment partner of the Housing Corporation and is the Homebuy Agent for Bedfordshire.

BPB has a wide membership of public private and voluntary organisations that are working together to improve the health and wellbeing of the community. BPB has produced a community strategy setting out its priorities until 2010, which focus on preparing for growth, improving life chances and community safety.

John trained as a town planner before embarking on a career in housing, initially concentrating on housing development. He has held senior positions in a number of housing associations for over 20 years, the last 16 as Chief Executive level in Southampton and Bedford.

As well as his day job John is also a board member of bpha and two joint venture companies it has established providing residential and nursing care and the National Housing Federation, where he is nominated to become the next national chairman. Through his role on BPB John is also a member of the Bedfordshire Countywide Partnership.

John believes that the growth area status Bedford has should provide a real kick start to the local economy creating opportunities for all sections of Bedford’s communities and tackling problems of deprivations affecting many people. Creating new jobs and improved infrastructure have to be at the heart of the growth.
