The Milton Keynes and South Midlands Sub Regional Strategy
sets a target of 19,800 jobs to be created in the Bedford Growth Area by 2021. The Joint Economic Development Strategy
identified that approximately 50% of 19,500 net additional jobs is expected to come from inward investment with, the remaining 50% targeted to come from indigenous business development and new firm formation.
The importance of jobs
If the additional jobs are not created there would be a danger of there not being sufficient locally generated demand for the planned housing developments. Equally, the creation of housing developments in themselves without the essential jobs to support those residents could potentially exacerbate out commuting and undermine the sustainability of those future developments. The attraction of substantial inward investment into the Growth Area will help ensure the alignment of jobs growth and housing growth occurs. The long term Growth Prospectus is likely to be a key document and set of tools which will enable the partnership to better market and promote the Growth Area.
